Owning a brand new computer or laptop is a joy for anyone. However, some of you may be clueless on what applications to install on your new computer. This article lists out six essential programs you would definitely want to have installed on your new computer. Some of them may not seem handy at first but they could be at later date.
One program you must have is the Microsoft Office Suite. In this program suite, you will find Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and Powerpoint. All four of these programs are commonly used to create and edit documents, slide shows and posters. If it is too expensive to purchase then consider using Google Documents or Open Office instead.
I believe installing excellent security programs is what you should do first when you get a brand new computer. There are three types of security applications which you should consider: spyware blockers, antivirus programs and firewall software. These three programs are essential in maximizing the overall security of your personal computer. There are many free and excellent security applications available like Spyware Doctor and AVG Antivirus.
At some point, you may need a design program to edit any images or photos. This is when Adobe Photoshop comes in handy because it can do absolutely anything. For example, if you need to change the image to a specific size then you have the size tool. If you need to change the background colour then you could do it without putting too much effort while using Adobe Photoshop. If you do not need a design program then Paint should suffice.
At some point, you will want to watch videos on your computer. Unfortunately, videos come in different codec like XVID and DIVX. Without these codec, you will not be able to load and watch some of the videos you download. A way to solve this is by downloading a free media player called VLC. It is a great media player which loads any type of video codec.
A communication program is also essential in helping you chat with friends and family over the internet. The best thing about it is that it is totally free! There are many great free Instant messaging programs available like Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and AIM. You also have video conferencing programs like Skype which also offers cheap rate to use VoIP services.
A calendar is also useful to help you plan your daily activities and monthly schedule. Windows Vista already comes with its own Calendar tool which is pretty decent. If you do not own a Windows Vista then you can try Mozilla Sunbird instead. Mozilla Sunbird is a free calendar application which does a good job in helping you schedule your daily life.
